Compare appearance in the actual room
A polished finish generally has more pronounced reflection, while a honed finish has a softer appearance. Lighting, stone color and existing wear influence how either looks. View a sample under the light used in the room and from normal standing positions. A close-up or wet photograph can give an incomplete impression. Discuss whether your goal is to match an adjacent area or change the character of the whole surface.
Check what the existing material allows
Previous repairs, uneven tiles, cracks and the available material thickness can influence the restoration scope. Ask which preparation stages are needed to reach the proposed finish. Honing and polishing do not repair movement in the supporting structure or secure loose pieces.
